Many people associate meditation with sitting on the ground in the “lotus” position with their legs crossed. The most important thing, however, is to be comfortable. Many people like to sit in a chair with their feet on the floor. Most experts think that it’s important to be sitting erect while meditating. Lying down to meditate can often result in falling asleep instead and missing out on the true benefits that meditation offers.

It’s important to allow enough time for your mind and body to relax when first beginning to meditate. At first, you simply follow the rhythm of your breathing. Don’t try to force anything. As you are “watching” your breath your attention is on the process of inhaling and exhaling.

When distracting thoughts enter your mind – and it is “when,” not “if” these distracting thoughts come – it is best to just observe and accept them without judgment. Allow them to move through your conscious mind without focusing on them or allowing them to pull you away from your meditation practice. Trying to “resist” these kinds of thoughts will only give them more power and draw your attention away from the central purpose of the meditation.

Meditation can last from a few minutes to many hours. It is best to keep your meditation times short at first. It is seldom beneficial to meditate for more than an hour, even after years of experience. You should focus on quality, not quantity.

Many people experience an increased sense of awareness or “mindfulness” during and after meditating. They also often experience a greater sense of peace and wellbeing as distractions fall away. The results of meditation can be quite dramatic.

Meditation: Higher Purpose

Each morning, I devote about 30 minutes of my day to sitting erect in a comfortable chair closing my eyelids, shifting my eyes in an upward position while focusing at a tiny point just above my brow, slightly inward to perform my daily meditation practice.

Sounds rather uneventful huh! Well, not really.

There is a real purpose to this “meditation thing” after all. I have been practicing meditation for several years now. I can remember my very first experience with meditation. I received instruction in a meditation technique called “Transcendental Meditation”. While practicing this technique, I quickly learned how to calm my mind and touch upon a deeper awareness of myself that I had never experienced before.

Why was this so important?

This was a time in my life when I was looking for something more. Deep down, I knew that there was some deeper meaning to my life that I wished to experience other than what scientific or religious dogma proposed. I felt it was time for me to have some one-on-one time with my “maker”. From what I was told by all of the books I was reading at the time, the practice of meditation was going to get me there.

It seems that very few people fully understand the true benefits of meditation…just my own observation. I was on a mission to spend as much time necessary to really understand and learn this ancient art. How was it going to affect or alter my spiritual nature?

To let you know how naive I was, when I was younger, I use to think that meditation was only for those people living in a monastery deep in some remote mountain village or for those people limber enough to sit for hours at a time in a lotus position with their legs all wrapped up like a pretzel. I had no idea as to the real purpose or benefits that would result from a daily practice of meditation.

The following are three important insights in which I have come to know and understand about meditation that I would like to share with everyone:

First, not all meditation practices are the same. Many of the major meditation practices differ in many ways. They may differ in regards to their goals, beliefs, mental activities, content, and use of breath, imagery and visualizations. I’ve learned not to label all meditations within the same category. Check out the book – THE EXPERIENCE OF MEDITATION by Jonathan Shear. This book gives a more accurate review of each of the world’s major meditation practices and what makes them different.

Second, meditation is indispensable to spiritual development…I’ll even goes as far as to say, “Without a meditation practice achieving and functioning at higher states of consciousness is virtually impossible”. I have come to learn that the more that you can repeatedly expose yourself to higher awakened states of being (psychic, subtle, causal and nondual states) the quicker you will climb into higher stages of development. No other single technique has ever proven to have such an accelerated rate of development than meditation.

Third, in order to achieve and function at a higher state of consciousness a meditation practice must provide you with more than just a deep state of relaxation. It must provide you with the ability to awaken the multidimensional energy that resides at the base of the spine of an individual (commonly referred to as Awakening the Kundalini) and draw this energy upwards through the spine and throughout the individual’s subtle energy fields.

One thing to caution is not to control your breathing too consciously. As you move into the deep meditative state, you want to turn your focus from consciously breathing to deeply meditating.

However, using tools is not a must if you prefer a simple plain breathing control exercise to bring you into the meditative state. When using music, you must pick something pleasing to the ears but not powerful music like heavy metal or rock. Also, the key point to remember is to choose music that won’t distract you. You should choose music with only melody and not any lyrics. Incense is also helpful but takes some preparation on its own. Incense helps you relax, but do make sure that ventilation in the room is good. You don’t want to get throat irritation during meditation as a result of smoke building in the room.

Step 2: Relaxation

Relaxation is the challenging part of meditation that is often overlooked. Once you have assumed your chosen position, prepared your tools, and begun breathing, your goal now is to let your body relax completely. Every muscle in your body should be as relaxed as possible. The recommended way is to start at your feet and tense up your muscles as hard as possible for several seconds, and then release them. After your feet, move up to your legs, calf muscles, and then your thighs, hips, abs, chest, and arms. Eventually, you will reach your face and the top of your head. At the end of this process, your entire body will feel so relaxed that you lost the sense of your body weight. This process will feel lengthy when you first do it, but you will be able to find your rhythm after a few practices.

When you reached a state of deep relaxation in every part of your body, the real meditation begins.

Step 3: Use Different Meditation Exercises For Different Purpose

As you control your breathing and set your body into a state of total relaxation, you free yourself from any mental focus and clarity and your mind starts coming into clarity. At this point, you can choose to practice the following basic meditation exercises:

Meditation Exercise No. 1 -Build Mental Clarity:

The purpose of this exercise is to clear the mind. A clear mind is an empowered mind. The way to achieve this is to let your mind be still, and not think of anything. Sometime it is impossible not to think of anything because the mind chatters when send thoughts into your mind. When any thoughts come to your mind, don’t need to resist them, just know that they are there, without making any judgments. Remember not to continue to indulge in the thoughts, just stay conscious and observe them like a non-concerned 3rd-party. The thoughts will go away. By doing this, you’ll not let the thoughts cloud your clarity. As your mind achieves clarity, it builds will and concentration. You’ll find this to be one of the most relaxing exercises when you mastered the skill. The challenge you’ll face initially is to overcome the sense of boredom. Stay focus on you objective. It does take some mind discipline.

Meditation Exercise No. 2 -Create Visualization:

This exercise helps you build mental images much clearer without being interfered. The way to do this is by having a simple picture to focus in mind. It can be anything; a personal symbol, a religious symbol, a person, etc. At first, it is best to keep the image simple and easy to picture. As you progressed, move on to more complicated pictures. Make it as wide and clear as possible. After some practice, you can try giving it color. After that, animate it by making it rotate or move around. You can even visualize yourself touching the object with your hands and how it feels under your sense of touch. You will be very surprised to see how real it’ll begin to feel after you’ve had some practice. Remember to keep your mind on the task and not let it wander.
